How Slate handles your memory.

Effective May 22, 2026Last updated May 22, 2026

Slate is built on a simple premise: the things you save are yours. By default, your data stays on your device and we collect as little as possible.

Local by default

Your saves live in your browser. Nothing is shipped to any server we run.

No tracking

No analytics SDKs, no cookies, no behavioural data. We don't watch you use Slate.

Always exportable

Your saves belong to you. One click to clean JSON or CSV — no lock-in, no holdout.

01Principles

Slate is built on a small number of opinions that constrain every product decision below.

  • Local first. Your saves are yours, stored in your browser, on your device. There is no hosted cloud today.
  • Minimum collection. If we don't need a piece of data to make Slate work for you, we don't collect it.
  • No advertising. We do not run ads. We do not sell, rent, or share your saves with third parties.
  • No AI training. We do not use your saves or personal data to train AI models.
  • Honest defaults. Privacy-friendly settings are the defaults. We don't dark-pattern you out of them.

02What we collect

By default, we do not collect or process your data. Slate does not require an account and does not run analytics on this website.

On your device
  • URLs and titles of pages you save
  • Tags, notes, and collections you create
  • Timestamps and which list an item is in
Never collected
  • Browsing history outside saved items
  • The contents of pages you didn't save
  • Keystrokes, mouse movement, or screen recordings
  • Inferred interests, topics, or behavioural profiles

03Where your data lives

Slate is built on a local-first architecture. Your library lives in IndexedDB inside your browser. That copy is the source of truth — and the only copy today.

There is currently no hosted sync, backend account system, or shared cloud storage operated by Slate.

Because your data is local, it may persist on your device even after you stop using Slate. You can wipe it at any time from Settings, or by clearing site data in your browser.

04Analytics & tracking

Slate does not use advertising, behavioural analytics, or tracking SDKs. We do not track your behaviour, usage patterns, or interactions inside the app.

This website does not use cookies for tracking or advertising purposes.

05Optional integrations

In the future, Slate may support optional bring-your-own integrations such as personal sync providers, cloud storage, or AI services selected and connected by you.

These integrations will always be optional and clearly labelled before any data leaves your device.

If you choose to connect a third-party provider, the data required for that feature may be transmitted to that provider at your request.

The handling of your data by third-party providers is governed by their own privacy policies and practices.

Slate does not control or take responsibility for how third-party services process data you voluntarily choose to share with them.

06Sharing & third parties

We do not sell, rent, or share your data with advertisers or data brokers.

There is currently no payment processor, hosted backend, advertising network, or external AI provider receiving your saved content.

If third-party services are added in the future, we will clearly list what data they receive and why before those features are released.

07Your rights

Slate is designed so that exercising your rights doesn't require an email — most of them are available directly in the app.

  • Export. Download all your saves as JSON or CSV at any time.
  • Delete. Wipe your local library from Settings, or clear site data in your browser.
  • Access. Everything Slate knows about you is visible directly in the app.

If you're in the EU, UK, or California, you may have additional rights under GDPR, UK GDPR, or CCPA respectively. Since your data is primarily stored locally, many of these rights can be exercised directly by you.

08Children

Slate is not directed at children under 13, or under 16 in the European Union where applicable. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children in those age groups.

09Changes to this policy

If we make significant changes — especially changes that expand data collection or introduce external services — we will update the date above and clearly communicate those changes before they take effect.

We do not silently expand data collection.
